My travel to Tokyo (3/5) – Eating in Tokyo

Well as I said in previous posts, the food in Tokyo was really very cheap. Now I’m going to talk about places, foods, price…

Desayuno / Breakfast Sakura Hostel in Tokyo

The most of the days we took the breakfast at the Hostel because it’s very cheap. Moreover, while we’re taking it we’re conected to Internet to check the mail or look for information about the places we’re going to. There you could take all coffee & toasts that you want for 315 yens (2 euros more or less).

To lunch & dinner, one of the most important discoveries we did along the travel was the Yoshinoya restaurants. A very cheap restaurant. We find one of its restaurants in every district. There’s one next to Apple Store in Ginza.

Yoshinoya restaurants are very famous. There’re a lot of groups and pages on Facebook about it. Even there’s a group with more of 900 members. I met two spanish people in Tokyo that they said to me that they ate in a Yoshinoya restaurant in Los Angeles.

Yoshinoya Tokyo

There, I used to take a big bowl with rice and a salad with mashed potatoes. It cost to me 270 yens (2 euros more or less). You could take another things as liquid egg to mix with the rice or a Miso soup. Each one costs 50 yens (0,40 euros more or less). Also, there’s fish or meat menus for less of 500 yens (less of 4 euros).

The Odaiba’s day we ate in La Pausa, an italian restaurant inside Aqua City Shopping Center. While we’re eating we could see the Tokyo bay. The menu: Margarita Pizza with mozarella and four cheese gnocchi for 700 yens (5 euros more or less).

Restaurante italiano en Tokio / Italian restaurant in Tokyo

Saizeriya, another italian restaurant in Asakusa. Gratin spinach, mozarella pizza, garlic bread and you could take all the soft drinks, water, coffee… you want for 800 yens (6 euros more or less).

Jonathan’s coffee & restaurant. Pasta with vegetables 829 yens (more than 6 euros).

Tempura de verduras en Restaurante en Nikko / Vegetables Tempura in Restaurant in Nikko

I’d lunch in a very small restaurant in Nikko. It only had three tables and the menu was in many languages. Every wall in the restaurant was covered with post-it, polaroid photos, subway tickets… of people that were been there! I took a great vegetable tempura and a bowl with rice. It cost to me 800 yens (6 euros more or less).

Spaguetti al pomodoro con melanzane e mozzarella / Tokyo Bellini Café

I think the more expensive restaurant that we went was Tokyo Bellini Café in Shibuya. Spaguetti al pomodoro con melanzane e mozzarella cost to me 1.650 yens (less than 12 euros) but you could take all that you want on a buffet salad… and water, soft drinks, juices, coffee, teas…

In Tokyo, you take free water in every restaurant.

Other things:

  • Mcdonnals’s sundae ice only costs 100 yenes (0,70 euros more or less). We took two every days.
  • You can find vending machines in every street. I took a lot of ice coffees for 120 yens (0,90 euros more or less).
  • I saw 400gr. of Tofu for 39 yens (0,30 euros more or less) at supermarket.
  • Starbucks’s prices was cheaper than here.

Resilience

Instituto Cervantes

Last Monday, while I was walking I found Resilience exhibition at Instituto Cervantes, Madrid.

Essential Dictionary of the Sciences, Royal Academy of the Exact Physical and Natural Sciences says Resilience is:

Resilience shows the work of ten young artists who participated in the 2009 edition of the PHE Discoveries in Latin America. The works alludes to the capacity to adapt and survive of a society subject to constant fluctuations: politics, economic and social turmoil.

The photographers are: Ana Cecilia Gonzales Vigil, Livia Corona, Ramiro Chaves, Tomás Munita, Óscar Fernando Gómez, Mark Powell, Morfi Jiménez, Pavka Segura, Dante Busquets and Nicola Okin Frioli.

The exhibition places at Instituto Cervantes, ends on August, 20 and it’s winner of the Public Award to the best exhibition.

My travel to Tokyo (2/5) – Sleeping in Tokyo

Once again, thanks to Balboy we know where sleep in our travel to Tokyo because he slept there in his previous travel: Sakura Hostel.

Sakura Hostel is placed in one of the most emblematic districts in Tokyo, Asakusa. In Asakusa, there’re several temples as Sensoji Temple and a lot of shops with a variety of traditional tourist souvenirs…

Building completed in 2006 and everything is very clean. The staff was very very good and they speak english and there’s a girl that speak a little of spanish.

At the hostel there’re a lot of young people. We met people from Spain, France, Holland, Italy, Canada, Korea…

Moreover, the hostel is very cheap. We only pay 23 euros per person by day and we don’t pay to reserve. The only thing that we did was to send a email to tell our travel dates. When we arrived to the hostel we paid it. At the hostel, the breakfast only cost 2€ and you can take all coffee & toasts that you want.

Although, I you’re interested in this hostel, I advise you that you visit the Sakura Hostel website to know prices and everything they can do for you. Also, there’s more Sakura hostel and apartments in another places.

Finally, the hostel offer a Internet lounge with Free WIFI, Tv, DVD & PS2, kitchen with fridge, dishes, microwave, snacks… and so much!

I recommend Sakura Hostel to your travel to Tokyo.

My travel to Tokyo (1/5) – Fly to Tokyo

First, we bought airline tickets to fly to Tokyo. Baldboy visited Tokyo 2 years ago and tell us that British Airways was the best option. Althought, to this travel we search in other airlines, British was the cheapest. The return ticket only cost we 605€.

We flew from Madrid (Spain) but if you fly from city in other country it’s possible you find a cheaper ticket in another airline. You can use skyscanner.com to search flights and compare prices in a lot of airlines.

Our travel was Madrid – London – Tokyo. In Madrid we got the tickets to the 2 flights so when we arrived to London the only thing that we had to do was go to the next flight. We didn’t have to worry about the baggage.

Baldboy told to us that in his last travel to Tokyo there’s no time to put the baggage in the same flight so the baggage travelled in the next flight. When they arrived to Tokyo and they realized about it, were noticed by airport staff that their baggage would be sent to the hostel directly.

Madrid – London

From Madrid (Barajas) to London (Heathrow) the flight’s duration was 2 hours and 40 minutes. There, we had time only to lunch because we had to do a terminal change.

London – Narita

The duration of the flight from London to the International Narita’s Airport, the airport used to the international flights to go to Tokyo, was about 10 hours.

On every British Airways‘s flights (World Traveller Class) you have complimentary food and free bar service. They also provide you with blankets, cushions, eyeshades and flight socks to make your journey a more comfortable one. Moreover, seats have a personal screen with the latest films, tv shows, music and radio when you want to.

The distance in kilometers between Narita and Tokyo is 70 km. We used the train to go to Tokyo. In other post “Transportation in Tokyo” I’ll tell about the best way to go to the airport because there’s a lot of to do it.

Is Tokyo the most expensive city in the world?

* Viaje en avión de Madrid a Tokyo
* Dormir en Tokyo
* Comer en Tokyo
* Moverse en Tokyo
* Lugares de interés en TokyoTokyo

Really, Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world and there’s a lot of surveys that confirm it. After visit Tokyo for 12 days I might say that in Tokyo there’re prices for every taste. Tokyo is a great city to visit and as opposed to you might think, you can get a very cheap trip.

All my trip only cost me 1.300 euros, including flight, accommodation, food, transports inside Tokyo…)

I spent about 30 euros everyday in breakfast, lunch, dinner, subway, tickets for the observatories and many coffees & ice creams.

I’m going to blog everything about my Tokyo travel beacuse I think it can help someone who wants to travel there.

I’ll write the next posts:
